About the Danville Family YMCA
The YMCA of Danville has been an integral part of the Danville community since 1883 when it was chartered as a YMCA. In 1972, a new YMCA was built after raising $2 million including land, building, and equipment. In 1975, two tennis courts were added to the property. In August 2004, the already-purchased house on North Jackson Street is torn down, additional parking spaces were created to make room for the growing membership. In 2005, the first capital renovation campaign was started with a goal to raise $1.5M through several phases. In 2006 construction began on the $450,000 remodeling of the pool. The following year, the Y broke ground to build a new 5,400 sq. ft. wellness center addition.
Today, more than 2,700 members enjoy the programs and services that the Y has to offer. The Y is proud to ensure that the Y is accessible to everyone, and we never want anyone to be turned away for an inability to pay. The Y has a number of generous supporters from the community. The Y is more than a membership card. We’re bigger than the programs we offer in our facility or around the community. We’re family.

Why Move to the Area?
Danville offers small-town charm with big-city amenities. Here you will find world-class museums, live entertainment on a regular basis, shops full of rare and unique finds, watchable wildlife, and sporting events for every enthusiast. Each year, the community joins together for special events such as the Festival of Trees, Vermilion County Civil War Days, the National Sweetcorn Festival, Arts in the Park, county fairs, and the Taste of Downtown Danville.
Danville is well known for its rich history and numerous museums. Locals and visitors alike are often interested in our Downtown, full of Walldog mural paintings depicting the rich history of Central Illinois or visiting the Vermilion County Museum and Dr. Fithian Home where President Abraham Lincoln spent time working as a lawyer. The Vermilion County War Museum, a former Carnegie Library building, is another attraction that features memorabilia and artifacts from the Revolutionary War through Operation Iraqi Freedom.
The Danville area has a thriving culture of local sports, from the youth level to the big leagues. Historic Danville Stadium is the home of the Prospect League Danville Dans. During its time as a Dodger’s farm site, the stadium played host to baseball hall-of-famers like Jackie Robinson, Pee Wee Reese, Duke Snider and Gil Hodges. In 1992 the stadium was featured in the movie “The Babe”, and more recently offers fans a site to cheer on local up-and-coming high school and college sluggers, including MLB players Chuckie Robinson and Dylan Dodd. Besides baseball, Vermillion County’s culture of sports includes a recently renovated ice hockey arena, a 20-acre soccer complex, a 12-court indoor/outdoor tennis facility and 5 golf courses. The area has also produced several standout basketball and football pro players, including the NFL’s Justin March-Lillard and Trent Sherfield, who played their high school gridiron games just a few blocks from the YMCA.
Talent has never been a shortage in the Danville Area, with opportunities for live music, plays and performances happening almost weekly. Featured shows include the Summer Sounds Concert Series, Arts in the Park, Danville Symphony Orchestra performances, weekly music at Kickapoo State Park Landing throughout the summer, and of course, Danville School District’s talented music and performing arts groups! Some of our Danville stars have even made it big in the entertainment industry and are featured in the Fischer Theatre Arts & Entertainment Museum in Downtown Danville including Donald O’Connor, Gene Hackman, Dick Van Dyke, Jerry Van Dyke, and Bobby Short.
Vermilion County is home to over 15,000 acres of parkland, highlighted by the Middle Fork National Scenic River. Fishing, hiking, canoeing, horseback riding, mountain biking, camping, and relaxing are just a few of the favorite activities at our state, county, and city parks. City dwellers are amazed by the peace and tranquility of the area. The Balloons Over Vermilion spectacular sites of colorful hot air balloons is something to be seen in the summer when the annual Balloons over Vermilion event is hosted. Check out this weeklong event based at the Vermilion County Regional Airport during July. There are plenty of outdoor activities that will keep you coming back for more.
