Job Description

The Sports Director oversees the development and operations of the association's youth & adult sports program, ensuring the program meets its intended goals. This includes planning, organizing, implementing, supervising, and evaluating all sports programs, staff development, site maintenance, financial development and collaborations with community agencies in meeting the needs of its program participants. Emphasis will be on growing all sports but specifically soccer and volleyball - youth and adult.

The qualified candidate will possess at a minimum:

  • Bachelor's degree in sports management, recreation, physical education, or a related field.
  • Previous experience and demonstrated skill managing youth/adult sports programs.
  • Flexibility to work evenings and weekends as needed to accommodate program schedules and events.
  • Capable of supervising multiple sites
  • Ability to build and grow youth/adult programs
  • Strong ability to effectively communicate with program participants, parents, members and community partners.

SALARY: $50,000 - $55,000 annually

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITY: Hire, train and supervise all program staff including volunteer coaches. Must be able to supervise multiple locations and sports in one season.

Qualifications
  1.  Bachelor’s degree in Sports Management, Recreation or related area preferred. 
  2. Prior experience working with club soccer and/or volleyball preferred. 
  3. Prior experience working with youth leadership and/or development or YMCA professional work in a related field, preferred. 
  4. Prior supervisory experience preferred.
  5. Ability to supervise, train, and support program staff. He/she must possess the ability to establish and maintain harmonious relationships with staff, volunteers, and members.
  6. Organizational skills to simultaneously manage and complete multiple projects/programs.
  7. Ability to respond to critical incidents and to act swiftly in emergency situations
Essential Functions
  1. Serve as a role model to members and Y staff and live the YMCA mission, vision and values of the YMCA movement.
  2. Manage the sports program, including developing and monitoring the program budget to meet fiscal objectives; compiling program statistics to monitor and evaluate the effectiveness of and participation in the program; securing, scheduling, and maintaining the needed fields and facilities; creating and scheduling the activities or events; and maintaining and/or updating and transporting program equipment for games and practices.
  3. Ensure programs and services meet community needs including supervising existing program activities, establishing new program activities, and expanding the program within the community as needed. Coordinates program development by assisting in the marketing and distribution of program information, recruiting, recapturing and retention of participants.
  4. Program youth and adult sports clinics and tournaments.
  5. Ensure that YMCA program standards are met and safety procedures followed.
  6. Recruit and hire diverse staff and volunteer teams across multiple dimensions of diversity. Onboards, trains and develops them for success. Maintains staff schedules and evaluates staff performance.
  7. Create teams; develop and distribute team practice and game schedules, rules, guidelines, and handbooks; train and schedule sports officials and coaches; purchase/distribute team uniforms and awards; coordinates team photographs; organize and host season parties and events.
  8. Model relationship-building skills in all interactions; develop and maintain collaborative relationships with staff, parents and caregivers, and community organizations (e.g., state child care licensing agency, school administration) to maximize program impact and drive overall outcomes; maintain regular, clear, and concise communication within area of responsibility.
  9. Serve as program supervisor of the branch/sports center.
  10. Organizes or participates in Y activities, such as committees, special events, and fundraising.
  11. Participate in and solicit others to participate in the branch Annual Campaign.
  12. Maintain certifications listed under Certificates and Other Requirements.
  13. Adherence to all policies and procedures of the YMCA of the Iowa Mississippi Valley.
  14. Understand and follow all safety rules and regulations including knowledge of emergency procedures and location of emergency equipment.
  15. Regular and timely adherence to respective schedule/meetings.
  16. All other duties as assigned by the Branch Executive.
Required Certifications
  1. Current CPR/First Aid/AED Certification*
  2. Mandatory Reporter Certification*
