We are looking for dedicated people for the Y's Early Learning Center as Teachers & Assistants for infants, toddlers & preschoolers.
Job Description

The Early Learning Center Teacher & Aides are responsible for the direct supervision, teaching and safety of alenrollechildrein the infant, toddler, and preschool program. Teacher positions plan curriculum and conducts activities for preschool and assists in the implementation of enriching and nurturing children's program. Assistant positions support the teaching staff with the delivery of curriculum and care of children.  Early Learning Center Staff assure the classroom is in compliance with licensing, the environments and maintenance of program quality and school readiness standards for our center. This position must ensure the safety and well-being of children at all times.

Qualifications
  1. TEACHERS:  A minimum of 12-18 ECE units from an accredited college and a commitment to continue education to obtain a BA in ECE or a related field (AA minimum for associate teachers)   AIDES:  A minimum of 6-12 ECE units from an accredited college
    1. Infant / Toddler ECE units are required.  Completed of infant and toddler courses from an accredited college with a “C” grade or better.
  2. At least 18 years of age.
  3. CPR, First Aid, AED certifications and Child Abuse prevention training within 30 days of hire date.
  4. Up-to-date TB test every 2 years. If you have a chest x-ray on file a TB test is no longer required. Proof of immunization record (MMR and Tdap)
  5. Must have a current Live scan active on file.
  6. Previous experience working with children in a developmental setting preferred.
  7. Ability to plan, organize and implement age-appropriate/developmentally appropriate program activities.
  8. Previous experience with diverse populations. Ability to develop positive, authentic relationships with people from different backgrounds. 

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

  1. This position is not considered light duty.  Employee must be able to lift 40-60 pounds; able to stand, walk, sit, bend, squat, kneel, and be in good physical health.
  2. Employee must be able to be on their feet for extended periods of time.
  3. Must be able to safely withstand exposure to the elements which include sun, wind, and any weather while on duty.
  4. Must be able to plan, lead and participate in a range of activities in a variety of outdoor and indoor settings.
  5. Ability to see at normal distance and hear normal conversations and sounds.
  6. Use hands and fingers to fill out required forms on regular basis.
Essential Functions
  1. Implements the Rie Methond (for Infants & Toddlers) or Project Based Learning curriculum (for older children) within the established guidelines.
  2. Creates and implements weekly lesson/activity plans for the students
  3. Supervises the children, classroom, and all activities.
  4. Makes ongoing, systematic observations and evaluations of each child.
  5. Conducts parent conferences, and maintains positive relationships and effective communication with parents. Engages parents as volunteers when it is appropriate.
  6. Maintains program site and equipment.
  7. Maintains required program records.
  8. Attends and participates in family nights, program activities, staff meetings, and staff training.
  9. Ability to plan, lead and participate in activities.
  10. Promote, establish and maintain a positive YMCA image at all times.
  11. Dress in an appropriate and professional manner following YMCA rules and guidelines.
  12. Follow YMCA work rules and procedures to complete all assigned tasks and duties in an efficient, timely and positive manner at all times.
  13. Employee is to model non-sexist and non-racist behavior towards children parents or staff.
  14. Employee must take initiative to be willing to assume additional responsibilities as needed.
  15. Employee must be cooperative, accessible and an active member of the YMCA staff.
  16. Follow all YMCA, Early Learning Center Department, and State Licensing policies and procedures at all times.
  17. Maintain State Licensing and staff/child ratios requirements at all times.
  18. Helps orient new parents and children to the program, assist with tours as needed.
  19. Address parent concerns and comments in a timely and professional manner; keep the Early Learning Center Director informed of all parent concerns and issues.
  20. Some classrooms require diapering or toilet training.   

SAFETY & RISK MANAGEMENT:

  1. CPR, First Aid and AED certifications must be current.
  2. In house Sexual Harassment, Child Abuse and Safety Trainings must be complete within the first 30 days of employment.
  3. Absolutely no contact with students or program participants outside of the YMCA either in person, via social media, text, online, etc.  Babysitting or caring for children who are enrolled or were enrolled in the program is prohibited.  Any outside contact with current or former enrollees of the program will result in immediate termination.
  4. Employees should be aware that all information published on a blog or public website is public accessible. You are advised to be mindful that the information you post on the internet will likely be seen by members of the Santa Monica Family YMCA community and could reflect poorly on your character. Therefore, information posted on public websites that reflects poor character values is putting your job at risk.
  5. Employees may not wear headphones or earbuds while on duty.
  6. Employees may only use their cell phone when off duty or for emergencies.
  7. Employees may not take pictures or post pictures of students or program participants on any form of social media without the consent of the parent/guardian and the YMCA Administration.
  8. Employees may not accept financial or cash gifts or payments from parents or guardians.

Required Certifications

  • Infant Toddler ECE units are required.  Completed of infant and toddler courses from an accredited college with a “C” grade or better.
  • AIDES:  A minimum of 3-6+ ECE units from an accredited college or currently enrolled in ECE classes.
  • Current CPR, First Aid, AED certifications
  • Up-to-date TB test within the last 24 months.  If you have a chest x-ray on file a TB test is no longer required. 

  • Proof of immunization record (MMR and Tdap)
